Ultra-rare signed etching from Original Etchings by American Artists, by S.R. Koehler, by Cassell and Company in 1883, Excellent Rare+ condition, Never framed, this etching was from the Cassell & Co. ‘Edition De Luxe’, which was limited to 200 copies and the complete portfolio set comprised one set of Japan Proofs, signed by the artists, and mounted with mats, and done up in a neat portfolio case, as well as another set of plates being Proof Impressions on India paper bound with the text in neat flexible binding, and the whole set was enclosed in a handsome cloth case, originally selling for the whopping price of $125.00 (about $3,807- in today’s dollar for 2023). Cassell & Co. originally issued three editions of Original Etchings by American Artists, and consisted of; 1st edition was the ‘Parchment Edition’ (Limited to 3 copies, and sold to subscribers only, issue price $300- [$9,138- in today's dollar for 2023]), 2nd was the ‘Edition De Luxe’(Limited to 200 copies, also sold to subscribers only, issue price $125- [$3,807- in today's dollar for 2023]), and third was the ‘Popular Edition’ (Issue price $20- [$609- in today's dollar for 2023]). The complete series consisted of 20 individual etchings by different artists and no artist was represented by more than one specimen of his work. None of the etchings were sold separately and when all copies of the editions were sold out, Cassell & Co. stated that they would send a printed list of subscribers to each purchaser.
