Artist Statement

Painting is a lifelong learning process. Being self-taught, I find inspiration from great masters of the past and their knowledge of materials and techniques, as well as their commitment to excellence. I am always striving to improve and I find the more I learn the more demanding painting becomes. For me it takes a great deal of concentration to paint at a level that gives me the results I am seeking.

Occasionally when I am painting an image that I am really excited about, a state of mind occurs in which I travel to the site - feeling the sun, smelling the air and hearing the sounds as they were first experienced. At this point time has no meaning, and an hour will pass as though it were one minute. Someone could be standing next to me speaking, and I am unaware. This state of mind occurs with my small alla prima paintings, which are simple in design and are completed in one focused session. These works then keep freshness about them; nothing is overworked or labored and subtleties are not lost. This allows the viewer to participate in the experience and fill in the details. These are my best works and this is why I paint.

Even when I am working from my own photographic references, I am able to again become a very real part of the spirit of a particular location. I am enthralled with the beauty of God’s creation. My hope is that I have adequately shared my vision, and that the viewer will receive the same pleasure that I experience in creating it.

Biography

Karl David Heerdt was born in Western New York and has always called the area his home. For more than twenty years he has been a cabinetmaker and designed and built homes locally. During this time Karl has slowly become aware of and steadily nurtured the art that is a part of him. Recently he has taken his love of art to more serious level. Renting studio space in the Market Street Art Complex in Lockport since 2001 has proven rewarding. Karl is represented by Meibohm Fine Arts, East Aurora, NY; his work is collected privately and by corporations in the United States and Canada.
