Rita Argen Auerbach
Western New York in Watercolor
Exhibition:
Friday, April 25, 2014-Saturday, May 24, 2014
Rita Argen Auerbach is a shining example of an artist’s work being a true reflection of the person. Her vibrant, bold watercolor paintings possess a certain energy and vitality which place the viewer firmly in the moment. Rita’s command of the complex medium melds freshness with control, drama with subtlety and loose brushwork with enough detail to create a flowing composition that appears effortless. Whether in a shadowed Buffalo architectural cityscape or a sunlit Chautauqua niche, there exists a glowing connection to the place.
This connection is evidenced not only in Rita’s paintings, but in her continued tireless efforts to educate students and advocate for the arts in Western New York. Rita’s “let’s do it” attitude has done much to promote recognition of the transparent watercolor medium within many organizations and institutions, including the Chautauqua Institution and the Burchfield Penney International Center for Watercolor. Her images can be easily identified for their skillful, dramatic, color-filled interpretations of nature as well as our man made world.
Rita's newly published catalogue,
Rita Argen Auerbach: Chronicle (2014), is now available for purchase here at the gallery. The book centers on her two concurrent 2014 exhibitions: "Rita Argen Auerbach: Western New York in Watercolor", Meibohm Fine Arts, April 25 - May 24, and "Rita Argen Auerbach: Chronicle of a 40-year Career in Watercolor", Kenan Center, May 4 - June 15. The book features an introduction by noted SUNY Buffalo State lecture and independent curator, Gerald Mead, as well as essays by Richard Rayner, Tom Becker and Barry Muskat. Additional material in the catalogue includes a complete biography & timeline, artist statement, exhibition checklist, bibliography, select collections, lenders & donors to the exhibitions and more. The 70-page book is filled cover-to-cover with over 80 full-color images of Rita's paintings spanning her 40-year career as an artist, several of which are included in the two above mentioned exhibitions. Please call the gallery 716-652-0940 to reserve a copy.
