Amos Sangster (1833-1904)
"Sangster's Niagara" Original studies & etchings from the 1886 Niagara River from Lake to Lake folio

Exhibition:
Friday, October 18, 2013-Saturday, November 30, 2013

Due to an overwhelming response from the community, the "Sangster's Niagara" exhibition was extended through Saturday, November 30, 2013.

“Sangster’s Niagara” an exhibition of the major life’s work of Amos W. Sangster (1833-1904), the “Artist of the Niagara Frontier”, is currently on exhibit at Meibohm Fine Arts in East Aurora, NY, October 18 – November 16, 2013. This unprecedented collection is the culmination of more than two years of work at the gallery, uniting Sangster’s exquisite original studies with his signed etchings from the famed folio Niagara River and Falls from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario.

Sangster’s ambitious project was published from 1886-89 as the self-taught artist’s dream, that was a decade in the making. It consisted of 153 copper etchings based on numerous ink and graphite drawings, as well as gouache paintings arranged in folios. The subject matter included the Niagara River, rapids, falls and gorge as well as its connection to the region, including Grand Island, area forts and Buffalo’s harbor and commerce. The artist’s intimate knowledge of the region is deftly recorded in sparkling or misty water, textured rocks, fort ruins, shadowed trees, riverbanks and buildings.

Amos W. Sangster, well respected by artists, collectors and the business community of the late 19th century now has a deserved light shed on his significant artistic and historical contribution to the Niagara Region. The fall 2013 issue of Western New York Heritage Magazine includes a feature article on Amos Sangster written by Mark Strong.

Note: More original artwork & etchings are available on our artist page for Amos W. Sangster's link.
