The Moment Observed
The recent paintings of Karl Heerdt assembled in this exhibit entitled “The Moment Observed” are as much about his developing affinity with color as they are about a specific place or compositional element. Careful, intellectual rendering has given way to the quality of brushstroke and sophisticated color mixtures. Location is less exacting, more intangible. Complex color relationships begin to unfold on the canvas from the very first application of paint.
Inspired by Pennsylvania impressionists including William Redfield and Daniel Garber, and Taos colorist William Herbert Dunton, Heerdt is focused on the space which each stroke of color occupies and its connection to the whole composition. Sometimes the spirit of a place may give inspiration for color, and conversely sometimes there is a search for subject to fit the soul of the envisioned hues; but always color is the language.
A limited edition giclee print of #34 "Woodland Depths" is available, and is signed & numbered by the artist.
