Exhibition:
Friday, October 23, 2009-Saturday, November 21, 2009

‘Environs Preserved’ featuring Western New York artist Harold Dodge (1924 – 1990) is an exhibition of paintings completed by the artist during the 1980’s. With lifelong interests and accomplishments in many areas, Mr. Dodge sought in both word and deed “growth through diversity”.

Harold studied briefly at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY before entering the Air Force in 1944 where he was deployed to Europe during World War II. Later stationed in England, he met his wife Barbara, with whom he raised five children. As a businessman, Dodge used an education in accounting to contribute to a family company which supplied specialty equipment for the aviation industry. As a community activist he volunteered his service for local planning and development boards.

Always an environmentalist, he helped create two centers dedicated to preserving nature and educating the public – Beaver Meadow Audubon Center and Tifft Farm Nature Preserve. An interest in ornithology prompted creation of a series of bird paintings as well as a term as President of the Buffalo Ornithological Society. Bird watching was a recurring activity in travels throughout the states, including Montana, Colorado and New Mexico.

Music was another lifelong passion for the artist, whose handmade dulcimers often played original compositions at family gatherings and school presentations. He played at least eight other instruments including French horn and violin. Often dubbed ‘Mr. Earth’, Harold used music as well as his own slide presentations to teach students about Western New York ecology.

Painting was yet another vehicle for learning and exploring, while depicting his concern for the environment. Dodge exhibited his oil and acrylic compositions of Buffalo cityscapes and outlying areas in local galleries, taking numerous awards for his work. Many integral parts of the man made Harold Dodge an artist of life in its truest sense. In the artist’s words, “the only real limits to our lives are those we place upon ourselves”.
