Artist Bio

Charles Houseman was born in 1950 in Niagara Falls, NY and graduated from North Tonawanda High School in 1968. He received his B.S. in Art Education from Buffalo State College in 1973, and his Master’s Degree in 1978. He currently lives in Hamburg with his wife Peg who is an R.N., and a spinner and weaver. Houseman is an art instructor at Springville Griffith Institute High School.

Houseman has used long held interests in music and American history and love of nature to give direction to his work. A perpetual student, Houseman continues to work on technique, modifying his brushwork, working with lighting, atmosphere and composition. He has work in many corporate collections and actively exhibits with the Buffalo Society of Artists as well as other regional and national juried shows.

Artist Statement

Paintings may be finished in moments, or may take months to complete. Either way, they involve the expression of emotion– what causes an artist to try to capture a scene or a sensation. My first experience being outdoors in absolute darkness on a camping trip led to my realization that there’s another world here–the natural world. Each painting I create is an attempt to remember the sensations and excitement of that moment. Whether in local valleys or the shores of Maine, I try to set on canvas that “otherness” of nature. Working in traditional methods gives me the opportunity to express my sense of wonder at this ordinary, everyday wonderland all around us.

“If a painting is good, it will be mostly memory”
Andrew Wyeth
