DUAL NATURES
Unified by the dynamic resonance of nature in their work, Mark Lavatelli and Polly Little each bring their unique interpretation to the two-person exhibition at Meibohm Fine Arts. Lavatelli and Little, a husband-and-wife duo working in WNY since the 1980’s are both known for the mastery of their unique mediums. Lavatelli’s paintings are created in the ancient beeswax technique called encaustic and Little’s paintings, sculptures and bas reliefs in acrylic and plaster. Pairing their unique approaches to the natural world of flora and fauna, the viewer may hold them in direct opposition, yet threaded together by inspiration and abstraction.
Lavatelli’s primary subject matter is close-up views of trees and their branches, which he takes as representative of nature as a whole. “I am particularly captivated by the relationships of positive and negative spaces created by tree trunks and branches. The unique properties of the temperature-based encaustic medium are seen in paintings where lines are melted through layers of paint. Many paintings include collaged fragments of encaustic monotypes.”
Inspired by the animal world around her, Polly Little explores color, dimension and whimsy in her works. “An intense investigation of the human-animal bond lies at the core of her recent paintings and sculptures. Based on her exhaustive observation of domestic pets, wild animals in zoos and in nature, as well as animal photography. Little’s paintings depict not only the wary animal gaze, but also suggest spiritual connections. They remind us of the cultural history of humankind’s relations with animals, both worshipped and sacrificed, and as man’s first painting subjects.”
