Gerald Mead is well known for his extensive collection of artworks by past and present Western New York artists which he has shared with the public over the last 20 years through thematic exhibitions and loans to institutions across New York State. Louis Grachos, former director of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, said that Gerald’s collection “reveals an astute eye and thoughtful curatorial sensibility.” Gerald is also a highly regarded artist working in collage and assemblage whose work is in the collection of the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, Burchfield Penney Art Center, Castellani Art Museum, George Eastman Museum in Rochester and the International Museum of Collage, Assemblage & Construction in Santa Fe, NM.
This exhibition is a rare opportunity that brings together Mead’s dual passions for making and collecting art. Gallery owner Grace Meibohm and Mead co-selected work in a range of media from his collection by 14 historic artists including Charles Burchfield, Alexis Jean Fournier, Roy Mason, Walter Prochownik, Amos Sangster, Clara Sipprell, and Agnes Robertson. These works have been paired with works by the selected artists in the gallery’s inventory.
The companion exhibition of Mead’s own artwork includes a new series of Niagara Falls themed collages/assemblages that have been constructed with circa 1900 stereoscope cards of the Niagara River and Falls and miniature vintage frames. For each work in the series, an array of materials and found objects ranging from textiles and mechanical graphics to fragments of damaged jewelry and electronic resistors have been used to create dimensional collaged elements that cleverly allude to the subjects of the stereoscope images.
Not unlike his penchant for collecting art, Gerald seeks out and collects - often antiquated or arcane - materials and objects that serve as the source material for his collages and assemblages. These tandem exhibitions provide a glimpse of the parallel nature of those two avocations.
