Artist Exhibition Statement:
Rather than reflecting a preoccupation with just one subject, the paintings in “Nature as Muse” are derived from many and various encounters in the natural world. I am a traveler, and my paintings accompany me. The human-built environment is really a small part of the larger scheme of things when you observe or think about it, and usually those small reflections of ourselves take up exactly that much space in my work. The natural world is so full of sumptuous variety, it never fails as a source of inspiration for me.
If there is one thing that seems to preoccupy me, it’s the contingencies of light. A certain slant of light can sometimes (and often does) provoke me to paint a scene that, if a cloud had been somewhere else at the moment, I might not have otherwise noticed there was a painting lurking in the scene before me.
For this important reason, I avoid constructing or imagining subjects for paintings. The most remarkable moments of our lives come almost invariably from chance encounters.
