“Poetics of Place” expands on Jane Foley Ferraro’s mastery of oil, cold wax, and acrylic in capturing personal moments of serenity in nature. Ferraro, a self-described “intuitive expressionist” employs a dynamic horizon line throughout the exhibit which anchors the image yet leaves the works open to personal interpretation. The artist’s statement describes her process and inspiration as;
“My paintings are inspired by nature but emerge from memories and imagination, rather than specific references, in hopes of creating atmospheric, poetic images open to interpretation. A picture is not likely to be poetic if it is too literal, didactic, or obvious.
In writing of the poetics in Winslow Homer’s paintings, Thomas Denenberg, then Chief Curator and Deputy Director of The Portland Museum of Art (Maine) described Homer’s process as “The flick of a brush that conjures a memory, builds a narrative yet leaves the final chapter unwritten...seeking to ground the viewer in a landscape of the mind.”
It is this “landscape of the mind” that I hope to capture in this current collection of work that I call “Poetics of Place.” I hope you find your own special place here.”
