In the depths of winter with its bare branches and sleeping gardens, there is comfort in the beauty of stillness and in black and white works of art. Monochrome: Works in Black and White is an exhibit of artwork in varied periods, styles, and mediums connected by their simplicity and lack of color. This “off the wall” gallery feature, will allow for the works on view to evolve throughout the exhibition.
From 1847 to 2021, the works range from depictions of early life on the Niagara Frontier to contemporary oil paintings of Niagara Falls by artist Sean Witucki. Mid-Twentieth Century watercolors by Robert N. Blair capture the dormant beauty of Western New York in winter. We are very honored to be premiering works here at the gallery by award winning contemporary pastel artist, Kathleen McDonnell from her Fields of Gray series.
For the regional print collector, we have a selection of recent acquisitions from The Buffalo Print Club (1931-1962), including many works by Kevin B. O’Callahan along with works by renowned wood block artist, J.J. Lankes featuring scenes of nature, industry, and the working man. Antique black and white photography by Eleck Hall, Howard Beach, and Ernest Rawleigh are featured along with contemporary images by photography artist James Sedwick.
