Artist Statement:
At ancient Inca sites in the Sacred Valley of Peru, the STONES! - they shine on the floors of the markets and form intricate designs on every side street. Massive boulders are the foundation of ancient structures and perfectly carved stones with hints of gold remind us of the Inca glory. Some Sacred Stones in Inca society and religion are believed to be a straight connection between heaven and earth. And the colors! All those incredible natural dyes, the vivid spectrum in traditional garments, pink salt, and the colorful painted walls on the streets of Urubamba. The sites, stones and colors all came together from my Peru experiences in 2018. Now deeply rooted in me, they have slowly become part of me and my art.
Artist’s 2018 Sabbatical:
The Arquetopia International Artist-in-Residence Program offers competitive professional opportunities for national and international artists, designers, curators, art historians, art educators, writers, journalists, and cultural researchers. In early March 2018, I applied for a four-week residency and after a Skype interview with co-director of Arquetopia, Christopher Davis, I received word that I was among 75 selected from 350 international applicants for the upcoming 2018 season.
Working at the residency in Urubamba located in the center of the Sacred Valley was such a great life experience. In my original project proposal, I expressed my intent to learn the process of natural dyeing, which would give me a good base for deeper investigation on my own in addition to working on a series of small artworks inspired by nature and the Peruvian culture. As a result of the Urubamba residency, I did many successful fabrics samples using natural dyes, color tests on different handmade paper as well as a series of artworks on paper.
Besides my studio time I was able to travel to major Inca sites and explore the Peruvian culture. As an artist it was also a wonderful opportunity to network with other participants of the Arquetopia Residency Program.
After my return I completed artwork for wallpaper designs with Red Disk wallpaper company located in Buffalo, NY. The launch of the associated wallpaper collection “Sacred Stones” was held at the Burchfield Penney Art Center in October 2019.
Since then, I have been working on a new series for my upcoming exhibit “Garden at Sun Gate” at Meibohm Fine Arts.
