Artist Statement: Jane Foley Ferraro
My horizon paintings are the direct result of being introduced to oil and cold wax painting in 2015. As I worked with this medium I found myself creating abstract landscapes that I found appealing in their openness to interpretation. I began to focus more on negative space and to think about that which is not in the picture. To pursue this idea spatially, for me, means to allow you, the viewer, a space to contemplate, a space to make your own. Perhaps finishing a form with your own vision or imbuing the space with your own associative feelings and thoughts. Space, then, becomes freedom to connect on an intuitive level.
Cold wax medium is a dense paste made from natural beeswax and a small amount of solvent. It is mixed in varying proportions with oil paint and applied to the surface with a scraper, palette knife or brayer. The term “cold” in cold wax medium or cold wax painting refers to the fact that heat is not required for working with the wax medium since it dries by solvent evaporation rather than the cooling of the wax, as in encaustic painting. As the solvent evaporates out of the medium, the soft wax hardens to the density of a beeswax candle. Cold wax thickens oil paint, creates a more matte finish, and lends itself to layering, texturizing, and spontaneous mixing of colors when scraped into and reapplied.
