The concept of drawing as a necessary element in an artist’s portrayal of thoughts and ideas is the theme explored in works for the upcoming exhibition at Meibohm Fine Arts. “Original Originals” Vintage Drawings by WNY Artists, January 13 – February 10. Borrowing from a phrase coined by past owner Walter Meibohm to describe artists’ drawings, the title of the exhibition “Original Originals” hints at this most basic and universal language employed by many artists to capture site studies, portraiture or fleeting abstract concepts, their original thought.
Included in the exhibit are graphite, charcoal and conte drawings on paper by noted Western New York artists. Spanning decades from 1915 through the 1950’s, the pieces either serve to gather information for another more finished work, or the compositions are meant to exist as a final work.
In the words of Charles Burchfield referring to the summer of 1915 “I made hundreds of studies of clouds, trees, fields, field flowers and grasses, moonrises, sunsets and storms. All the ideas and materials for a lifetime had to be gathered that summer or never”. Embodied in the diverse works of the exhibit is the direct and literal linkage of creative idea becoming physical matter.
