Robert N. Blair (1912-2003) is a name familiar to many in the Western New York area for his bold and dramatic paintings in watercolor. “A Witness in Watercolor”, opening November 25, 2017 at Meibohm Fine Arts, describes a treasury of works newly available from a collection spanning a broad range of the artist’s times, themes and recognizable subjects.
With signature strokes of powerful blacks, diffused grays and intense color, the artist conveys a firsthand account of his experiences of service during WWII and scenes of travel throughout the US. Equally as direct and compelling are paintings including figurative and equine images, and landscapes in all the seasons.
Blair, along with Charles Burchfield and other contemporaries, many of whom studied or taught at the Art Institute of Buffalo (1931-1956), helped to elevate watercolor to a serious medium on par with the status formerly reserved for oil paintings. His vigorous use of the medium to process the scope and span of a spirited life, its challenges to survival as well as the portrayal of nature’s raw beauty is fully documented in this exhibition of works.
