John Rummell (1861-1942)

A native of Western New York, John Rummell was born in Springville, NY and received early education in Buffalo. He attended Emerson College of Oratory in Boston, MA and also studied landscape, portrait and figurative painting with several nationally acclaimed artists. Regionally he served office with the Buffalo Society of Artists and exhibited regularly as well as throughout the country including with the Art Institute of Chicago and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

An active lecturer, writer and orator, Rummell opened a school of oratory in Buffalo, lectured at the Albright Art Gallery, and taught landscape painting locally. He was inspired by the master landscape painter George Inness, and likewise challenged himself to create compositions describing diverse times of day, light and shadow patterns and atmospheric conditions. In the forward of a 1938 BSA exhibition catalog, he extolled beauty in art, especially representational realism: “.. its effect should be uplifting and never degrading… should inspire a greater love for the truth and beauty and for clean and wholesome living. No other kind (of art) can express the vision that will keep a nation alive and alert and advancing.”
