Connie & Newt

Artist statement:

If your life is intertwined with a dog or horse your blood pressure tends to be normal. Your existence is validated. You connect with the sights, sounds and smells of a world far removed from technology and tragic world news that seems to govern our lives.

Many years ago fellow artist Colin Coots took me to Saratoga. At five am we heard the horses breathing and pounding the dirt track before they emerged through the fog. We drew them this way. No cameras, no theories, just a creature that shows one what passion looks like.

Twenty five years later I realized how lost I had become. Fear ruled my life. I took a trip out west because of a dog I needed to meet - a valiant breed depicted by the early 20th century artist Richard Fath, whose work I had discovered. My current work pays homage to the legacy which that particular dog imprinted on my heart, and the horse who whinnied every morning when I opened the barn door. This work is about the people and the animals with whom they live who fire my heart with passion and gratitude. This show is about love.

Acknowledgments:

Posted on my studio wall hangs this quote from Ned Jacob when we painted horses from life in the Saguaro Workshop, AZ in 2012.

“Art is a discipline, demanding a lifetime of serious effort to master, though few have done so. When we undertake this journey, excellence must be the ultimate goal. It is not given to us to know how good we can become at this thing or how far we must travel. What is certain, that before we may fairly call ourselves “‘artist”-which is an honor if it is to be earned, we must have opened our hearts and minds to become students. The greatest obstacle to our development are arrogance, fear and timidity…Look at great pictures for their information they hold and to teach us humility. Hold your integrity as a sacred thing…”

These words keep me authentic. Our egos tell us who we should be. Our hearts, if we let them lead us, show us who we are. No one is self- taught. No one makes a life worth living without the contribution of others. I acknowledge that my life is what it is today because of the mentors, patrons and professionals with whom I’ve crossed paths. At stables, veterinary practices and barns around the country, many people and creatures have enriched my life:

Kathy Brown, Cedarburg Veterinary Hospital (Dr. Brewer and Dr.Schumacher) Mark and Mariana Chason and Family, Doris and Missy Clark, Kendra Courson, Joe and Vivian Enders, Nikki Green, Halcyon Farm (Stiles Colwill and Jonathan Gargrolo), Fr. Julian Hills, Krystal Creek Kennel (Tracy and Al Harmeyer), Dr. Anthony Krausen, Chuck and Amy Newhall, Orchard Park Veterinary Hospital (Drs. Mary and David Brummer & Dr. Mark Hedges), Phanton English Pointers (Dan Hendrickson), Peak Performance Kennels (Tammy Adsitt), Pigeon Creek Stable (Ann Jennings), Jim and Barbara Poythress, Henery Schmidt, John Smith, Shingbee Lake Griffons (Pat and Dorothy McKinley), Greg Sjaastad and Family, Stoneyridge Wire Haired Griffons (John and Lori Posthuma), Dave and Irene Thun, Art Ward, and Sally Ziegler.
