Thomas Kegler (American, 1970-) is a renowned artist and self-taught painter, producer, and teacher residing in Western New York. He is an Associate Living Master through The Art Renewal Center, as well as a Senior Fellow and instructor for the Hudson River Fellowship. Kegler's traditional oil paintings of landscapes, still life, and figures draw from the Masters' approach to the canvas. Revisiting the processes and techniques of the Old Masters in light of classical and contemporary subjects guides his expression of life's subtleties.
Thomas studied art at the State University College at Buffalo, and graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design in 1993, and later received an MS in Art Education in 1999, Buffalo, NY. In 2008, he furthered his studies with the Classical Realist Painter Jacob Collins (American, 1965-) at the Hudson River School of Landscape in Hunter, NY.
Kegler's work has been shown nationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions at many distinguished galleries. His paintings reside in several prominent collections throughout the United States. His work and processes have been featured in notable magazines and publications including American Arts Quarterly.
Tom is committed to the consistent growth and development of his skills and to the promotion of art education with an emphasis on classical techniques. He has self-produced an instructional documentary video focused on traditional plein air painting approaches. Kegler regards the act of painting as an opportunity to recall moving personal experiences and portray these events as poetic statements.
His paintings often feature outdoor themes such as; twilight landscapes, pastoral scenes, mountains, and water. He is also an accomplished portrait painter and his style also reflects contemporary realism as well. He also holds the title of Master Roycroft Renaissance Artisan, a designation of the Roycrofters-at-Large Association (RALA) of East Aurora, NY link. He has participated in numerous group and solo gallery shows nationally and locally.
Since 1999 until the present, he has taught at the East Aurora Public Schools, as an instructor and curriculum coordinator for the art department in East Aurora, NY. Thomas is active presenting to groups, critiquing & judging shows, and organizing various art related events in the Buffalo area. Recently in September of 2007, Thomas had the distinction of doing a few commission paintings for the album cover and interior artwork for the Ani DiFranco album “Canon” (Righteous Babe Records, her own label, link), and who is a native of Buffalo herself and maintains her record label company here in the city as well. Thomas most recently in 2008 received the Dumond Memorial Award at the Hudson Valley Art Association juried 77th National Exhibition in Old Lyme, CT.
Artist Statement:
"Poetry of Place"
Through my work, I strive to bring an awareness and respect for God’s creations and their temporal qualities. They provide an infinite supply of beauty and inspiration. I paint traditionally - mirroring a time when academic training and processes were embraced and nurtured. This approach has given me the skills and knowledge to express myself through hand, head and heart.
I wanted to be a painter from the time I could first hold a brush. Many of my earliest memories are of exploring at the kitchen table with my siblings using paper, cardboard, crayons, scissors and glue. Today, using oil paints, my visions and emotions are given a voice through the infinite variations of color notes. Experiences are what I am called to paint… the materials, technique and subject are the vehicle.
Painting is a humbling experience… often the more you learn and grow, the more challenging it becomes. The many hours and days spent interacting with my subjects have opened my eyes to subtleties such as intricate color and value shifts, and beauty in the overlooked. Something new is revealed each time I visit the canvas. I paint daily - it is as necessary to my life as breathing.
Nature itself has been the most humbling instructor. I am awestruck at the visual inspirations that emerge around me in the outdoors. The sounds, smells, and tactile qualities that I experience while in field cannot help but be infused in the work. I strive to impart a universal quality that makes the viewer feel he has been there and can relate to the image.
Whether in the field or the studio, painting is integral to my life… a product of my faith and experiences.
"With Humility comes Wisdom” - Proverbs 11:2 – Thomas Kegler, 2014
* I am often asked about the inclusion of Biblical verses in the titles of my paintings. I am a practicing and dedicated Catholic. My faith is infused in my life, my family and my work. I include Biblical verses in my titles as an invitation for others to read the verse(s) and perhaps find a connection between contemporary life, the painting and the ancient writings. They are not meant to be literal or closed-ended titles, but open to interpretation and experience. Thank you for considering…
