Mildred C. Green (American, 1874-1951)
Mildred C. Green was a muralist, illustrator, educator, and writer. She was born April 18, 1874 in Paris, New York, and moved to Buffalo in 1892. She received her arts training at the Art Students' League of Buffalo and the Buffalo School of Fine Arts, where she studied under noted artists George Bridgman, Lucius Hitchcock, and Edward Dufner. Green was one of the few women painting during a period dominated by men. Throughout her career, she created several illustrations for the Buffalo Courier Express and completed murals for M.J. Kinsella in Buffalo and the Niagara and Eastman Power Company in Niagara Falls. From 1920-1941, Green taught life drawing and anatomy classes at the Buffalo School of Fine Arts. She went on to teach private classes, as well as art at the University at Buffalo Summer Session.
Green was a member of several professional artist organizations, including the Buffalo Society of Artists, the Patteran Society, and the Guild of Allied Arts. She was also a life member of the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy. She won several prizes for her paintings, including drawing and anatomy from the Art Students' League of Buffalo and popular vote in the Buffalo Society of Artists' Annual Exhibitions in 1933 and 1946.

1874- April 18, born in Paris, NY.
1892- Moved to Buffalo, NY, and maintained a studio at her home at 717 Delaware Avenue (later maintained a studio at 835 Richmond Avenue, Buffalo, NY and a summer studio in Clayville, NY).
Circa 1900- Studied at the Art Students’ League, Buffalo, NY; the Buffalo School of Fine Arts under George B. Bridgman, Lucius W. Hitchcock and Edward Dufner.
1918- Exhibited at the Society of Independent Artists, NYC.
1920-41- Taught life-drawing and anatomy at the Buffalo School of Fine Arts (formerly the Albright Art School, now known as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery), Buffalo, NY. Her students affectionately called her “Ma Green”. She later taught private classes, taught art at the University of Buffalo Summer Session and also at the Browne Art School, Cape Cod, MA.
Circa 1940’s- Worked as a draftsman at the Bell Aircraft Corporation (later Bell Aerospace Corporation), Buffalo, NY, completing drawings of every phase of airplane construction.
1951- February 24, died at the Haven House Nursing Facility, East Aurora, NY after a long illness.
1996- Nov. 28-Dec. 18, exhibited, group show, "Bygone Buffalo: Paintings and Drawings by Early and Mid-20th Century Regionalists", Mildred's painting "Breakwall -- Fuhrman Boulevard" (1930) was shown, Fanette Goldman/Carolyn Greenfield Art Gallery, Daeman College, 4380 Main St., Amherst, NY.
2019 – In the Fullness of Time, Painting in Buffalo, 1832-1972. November 8, 2019 – March 1 2020, Burchfield Penney Art Center, Buffalo, NY
Honors & Prizes: Prizes in drawing and anatomy, Art Students’ League of Buffalo; Scholarship, Chase Art School, NY; Honorable mention, Strathmore watercolor contest (1910), Buffalo Society of Artists (1926); Won popular-vote for the painting “The Junk Man” in 53rd Annual Exhibition of the Buffalo Society of Artists, 1933, and won popular-vote again in 1946.
