Jonathan Daly (American, 1982-) contemporary painter, designer,
teacher and muralist.
Raised on an old farm in Western New York, Jonathan Daly was immersed
in a creative environment since conception. As the son of two painters
and the identical twin of a designer, he never considered another
path. In 2004 he graduated from Syracuse University’s School of Visual
and Performing Arts, where he was greatly inspired to pursue his
painting practice by the accomplished narrative painter, Jerome
Witkin.
Jonathan soon returned to the countryside to reacquaint himself with
the landscape that had shaped him. During this time the influence of
his father Tom's paintings, along with the still-life work of Bruce
Kurland, began to form his direction as a painter. In the fall of 2006
he journeyed east to attend the MFA painting program at Boston
University, headed by the British landscape painter John Walker.
Jonathan continues to regularly exhibit his paintings, including a
2012 solo show at Alpha Gallery in Boston. Currently Jonathan lives
and paints at his small creek side cabin in Bliss, New York. This
remote environment is intimately reflected in his most recent
paintings:
"The work examines the disconnect that saturates our contemporary
relationship with the land we inhabit. Most of my paintings are honest
narratives that describe the tenuous coexistence between our natural
roots and the fabrications of our species. The peculiar correlation
between the synthetic and the real are at the heart of my imagery. The
compositions are careful arrangements of familiar spaces and items
gleaned from my rural American life. I choose to make pictures from my
daily observations in an attempt to further understand the disparities
within our protected modern society."
