Marion Louise Stewart (American, 1896-1982) Western New York artist and decorator known for her still life, landscape & cityscape paintings. She worked in oils, watercolors and pencil. She maintained her residence and studio at 94 Olean Street in East Aurora, NY, and a summer home in Hector, NY.

Education:

Stewart studied art at Radcliffe College, Cambridge, MA (A.B.), and at the École des Beaux-Arts, Fontainebleau, France, with Jules V. Guerin (American, 1866-1946) and Jean Despujols (French, 1886-1965). She furthered her studies at Columbia University, and the Art Students League, NYC.

Chronology:

1896- Born, October 10th, Buffalo, NY.

1938-39-40- Exhibited, at the 5th, 6th and 7th Annual Exhibitions of the “Buffalo and Western New York Artists”, three paintings submitted each year 1938-39, (*Memorial Prize-Best Oil 1938), one painting submitted 1940, Albright Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY.

1939- Exhibited at the World’s Fair, NYC. Exhibited at the Great Lakes Exhibition, Cleveland Museum of Art, sponsored by the Patteran Society, Cleveland, OH.

1941- Exhibited at the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburg, PA.

1982- Died, January 16th, East Aurora, NY. Marion was survived by her brother, Dr. Charles Stewart, a long time physician also from East Aurora, NY, who died in 1992.

Memberships: The Patteran Society, Buffalo, NY.

Honors & Prizes: *Awarded the James Carey Evans Memorial Prize of $60 for the Best Oil in the exhibit, title of painting “Village Crossroads”, at the 5th Annual Exhibition of the “Buffalo and Western New York Artists”, Albright Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY (Nov. 19th, 1938).
