Marc S. Herring (American, 1969- ) painter, sculptor and teacher. The desire to create has been there for as long as I can remember. It’s an uncontrollable impulse that must run its course. As a child I used newspaper, cardboard and masking tape to create toys and sculptures just for the fun of it. My parents indulged me while I painted murals on my bedroom walls, dug up the yard in search of clay to bring my imaginary creatures to life.
After nine years of banking management and seven years in the auto industry, I decided to give back to the community that helped raise me. I went back to school to become an art teacher in the inner-city… 17 years later, I still love working with some of the most talented students you could imagine. Teaching sculpture (human anatomy) is one of my life’s pleasures! Working in oil and clay bring indescribable joy to me daily.
My preferred subject matter is the simple still-life. Books, grapes and cherries from my backyard provide a wonderful source of inspiration. I have an affinity for the historical, specifically the 1940s. WW2 is one of my favorite themes to paint. I hope to convey my heartfelt gratitude to those who sacrificed so much for the freedoms we now enjoy. My desire is that one feels a sense of calm, appreciation and connectedness to nature and to each other while viewing my work.
