Judson Brown (American, 20th C.-) A lifelong resident of Western New York, many years have been spent drawing and painting on the rivers, lakes, mountains and countryside. In recent years our Summer months are spent in the Adirondacks. Hiking mountains and canoing the rivers and lakes offers a constant inspirational source. The paintings I make are my personal reward. There are special feelings I have for many of these locations. That is what I attempt to capture within each painting. I enjoy the process of discovery that takes place when painting on location in that sense as much as I do the painting itself. Published Adirondack artwork appeared in the American Artist magazine in 1990.
My Bachelor of Science and Masters in Art Education and Fine Arts were earned at SUNY College at Buffalo. I think of myself as the artist first, then the art teacher. Teaching high school art in West Valley, NY for 34 years was wonderful. I took pride in being able to demonstrate varied techniques and methods for students. Continuing to teach today at various levels enables me to pass on what I consider valuable for artists working to improve on their skills. A sabbatical leave granted in 1988, to study painting with Ohio artist Don Getz, and Rockport, Massachusetts artist Tom Nicholas-NA provided a new junction for professional insight and artistic growth. Both artists, Getz and Nicholas, strongly urged the foundations of disciplined drawing for successful painting. Art educator intensive workshops at Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia reinforced those beliefs as I continue to further my own skills.
When I’m not traveling, my local scenery never fails to provide me with all the pleasures of painting I look for. I get out of painting what I put into it, everything I can, all the time. I continue to maintain active involvement in showing locally and regionally.
