About the Artist:
Joan V. Fitzgerald (American, 1930-2024) was born in Batavia and grew up in Rochester, New York. She studied Art and Design at the Rochester Institute of Technology and has a BS and MS in Art Education from Buffalo State College. After teaching art at Hamburg Junior High for many years, she joined the Humanities Department at Erie Community College, City Campus, where she was granted the President's Award for Outstanding Service. She has worked in acrylic painting, collage and printmaking. The themes of landscape, the seashore, and more recently figures, have always interested her.
She was a Signature Member of the National Collage Society, Hudson, Ohio; Signature Member of the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, New York City; Past President and member of the Buffalo Society of Artists; Past President and member, as well as was on the Advisory Board of the Western New York Artists Group. She won the Silver Medal at the 2011 Buffalo Society of Artists “One Hundred and Twenty Year Celebration” Catalogue Exhibition for her installation work “Fools for Love”, Anderson Gallery, University of Buffalo, Buffalo, NY, and also won an award at the 2011 National Collage Society’s 25th Annual Juried Internet Exhibition.
Joan was also a poet and a writer. Her six published children's books include The Magic Lunch Box, Not Another Christmas!, The Iris House, Dark Towers, Merry-Go-Round and Squash by Josh, b'gosh!. Her poetry had appeared in the Buffalo News, Artvoice, Raven Chronicles, HUSK, The Sow's Ear, Northwoods Journal and the Dan River Anthology. In 2005, she was awarded first prize in the Northwoods Journal poetry contest. She was the author of two poetry chapbooks- Glamor and the Sweet Life.
