Artist Statement:

I have loved art all my life. While I’ve arrived at thinking of myself as an artist only recently, with the ability to paint full-time since 2006, I have always done watercolor sketches or drawings of people or landscapes on site whenever the pressures of my life and career in AIDS research let up or when on vacation.

In 2006, I began to paint in oils, which was a revelation because of the capacity to embrace color so completely, as well as form and composition. I suppose I would place my instincts as a painter somewhere in between the “Fauves” with their wild approach to color, and the ashcan school. I especially enjoy plein air painting because it demands an immediacy of attention and focus because of the transient nature of all aspects of nature (light, shadow, color, subject). When painting I often feel that I am back to my childhood self, as if I am seeing with my heart as well as my eyes. If I am able to transmit even a portion of the joy I feel while painting to others with the painting, it will have been a successful effort.
