Eric Stry
Eric Stry (German-American, 1901-1975) was known for his oil paintings of landscapes, seascapes, harbor scenes and still lifes. Eric’s given first name and surname were Erich Strueh, and he was born February 19, 1901 in Germany. He immigrated to the United States in 1923, arriving in Boston, MA, with his artist wife Kaethe “Kay” Irene (née Augenstein) Strueh (Hungarian-American, 1899/1904-1963). Naturalization and census records show she was born December 24, 1904 (though her grave states 1899). Upon entering the United States, their last name was changed to Stry and they petitioned for naturalization in 1939.

Eric studied at the National Academy in New York and with his wife, resided in New York and Cape Cod. They were especially known for their landscapes, seascapes and harbor scenes of Provincetown and Truro, MA. He went by the professional name of Eric Stry, and was represented for many years at the Dodge House Art Gallery in Chatham, MA. His wife went by the professional name of Irene K. Stry, who sometimes signed her paintings with the name ‘Clair’. By 1940, residing in New York City, he maintained a studio there, while she worked as a freelance artist. Sometime around the 1950’s, the couple moved to Florida, where Irene died May 6, 1963 in Saint Johns, FL. Eric later died in Saint Petersburg, FL in December, 1975 at the age of seventy-four.
