Leonard C. Butler
Leonard C. Butler (English-American, 1898-) commerical artist and painter, primarily known for his watercolor paintings of landscapes, cityviews, marine scenes, seascapes and portraits. He was born July 3, 1898 in Coventry, Warwickshire, England. Butler’s early studies were at the Grammer School in Coventry and he later received a scholarship to study at the Coventry School of Art. He was a member of the Buffalo Society of Artists, The Patteran Society and the California Water Color Society. He exhibited at the Albright Art Gallery (now the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, prize), the New York’s World’s Fair (1939), the Golden Gate International Exposition (1939), the Burchfield Art Center (now the Burchfield-Penney Art Center), Walter Meibohm Fine Arts (now Meibohm Fine Arts) and with the California Watercolor Society.

He moved to Buffalo, NY in 1921 and resided at 22 Holland Place with his studio located at 493 Franklin Street in the city. He was also good friends with fellow Buffalo artist Francis Barker Valentine (American, 1897-1985).

1938- Exhibited, group show, Artists of Western New York, Albright Art Gallery (now the Albright-Knox Art Gallery), watercolor shown (prize), Buffalo, NY.

1939- Exhibited, group show, World’s Fair, New York. Exhibited, group show, Golden Gate International Exposition, San Francisco, CA.

1984- Exhibited, group show, “Buffalo’s Waterfront: A Tribute to James Carey Evans III”, one painting shown titled “Off Buffalo’s Shore” watercolor, 9 x 11.5”, Burchfield Art Center’s (now the Burchfield-Penney Art Center), Buffalo State College, Buffalo, NY.

1991- Exhibited, group show, “A Tribute to the Buffalo Society of Artists 1891-1991”, Walter Meibohm Fine Arts (now Meibohm Fine Arts), one painting shown titled “Off Buffalo’s Shore” watercolor, 9 x 11.5”, and was previously featured in the Burchfield Art Center’s (now the Burchfield-Penney Art Center) exhibition “Buffalo’s Waterfront: A Tribute to James Carey Evans III” in 1984, East Aurora, NY.
