Burr H. Nicholls
Burr H. Nicholls (American, 1848-1915) was born in Lockport, New York, and became a noted eastern landscape, figure and genre painter in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is primarily known for his landscapes, farmscapes, coastal & marine scenes, Venetian canals & doorways, village scenes, streetviews, portraits and figurative/genre scenes. Simple, homely barnyard scenes bore a great attraction for him and they comprise some of his best work.

He studied painting in Buffalo before traveling to Paris to study with painter Carolus-Duran (French, 1837-1917). In France, he also painted at the artist colony in Pont Aven with Frank Penfold, also a Buffalo native.

His was a member of the Buffalo Society of Artists and exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association (1871-73, 1879, 1882, 1884 and 1891), National Academy of Design (1873-95), Paris Salons (1880-82), Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1882-95), Art Institute of Chicago (1888-89, and 1894) and the Boston Art Club (1891-95), as well as in numerous exhibitions in this country, especially at the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY. His work is in the collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Heckscher Museum on Long Island and the Burchfield-Penney Art Center in Buffalo, New York. In later years he maintained his home and studio on Ketchum Place & Niagara Street in Buffalo.
