Sara M. Zak
Sara M. Zak (American, 20th C.-) Western New York visual artist, painter, sculptor and community arts organizer primarily known for her oil paintings that feature investigations of the post-industrial urban environment. Sara has also created highly interactive installations for one-night extravaganzas such as Hallwalls’ Artists and Models and ELAB’s City of Night. In 2011, she founded the activist art initiative Painting for Preservation and continues to actively oversee the effort, organize exhibitions and events, and conduct media outreach. She is a NYFA MARK 2011 alumni and a gold-medal award winning member of the Buffalo Society of Artists. She currently serves on the board of the Buffalo Society of Artists. She has exhibited throughout WNY at such venues as Dana Tillou Fine Arts, Hallwalls, Big Orbit, and The Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society. Sara holds degrees in Painting, Art History, and Education from the State University of New York College at Buffalo. She also teaches painting workshops throughout Buffalo and was recently named as a finalist for the Fall 2014 Sustainable Arts Foundation Award Winners.

“Her prevailing objective when painting is to utilize materials, brushwork, color and composition to reflect the imagery's content and purpose. To this end, she has explored the gambit of painting techniques and styles - from classical realism to pure abstraction.”

Artist Statement:

“I create paintings that explore the shifting nature of time, place, concept, actuality, and paint. I juxtapose unrelated moments in time in my work, while also showing a dichotomy between a planned concept and an actual existence.”

Education: Master of Science in Multidisciplinary Studies (Fine Arts, English, and Education; magna cum laude), State University of New York College at Buffalo (2009). English 7-12 Teaching Certification; Art K-12 Teaching Certification (2002). Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting (2000, summa cum laude). Bachelor of Arts in Art History (2000, summa cum laude). Further studies included workshops of traditional oil painting techniques with Robert Liberace and Thomas Kegler and completed NYFA MARK professional development program for artists.

2011, 2004- PBS Teacher Line Instructor and Trainer. Teach online college credit bearing professional development courses; enhance online learning with additional web and hardcopy resources; conduct workshops to teach instructors on using PBS Teacherline. Monitor and score online discussion forum with weekly feedback; provide feedback and grades for final projects.

2009-Present- GED Transitions Teacher, Frontier Central School District. Provide instruction related to the NYS GED exam to high school students struggling with traditional education.
