Todd Chalk
Todd Chalk (American, 1929-) was born in Hamilton, OH, and currently resides in Buffalo, NY. She received her B.F.A. and her M.F.A. from the University of Buffalo. She has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and is adept in both acrylic and watercolor media. She taught at Erie Community College, and at the University of Buffalo. She has had numerous group and juried shows throughout Western New York in such places as Burchfield Penney Art Center, Buffalo, the Albright Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, as well as in various cities and Canada to include the Dayton Art Institute, OH, National Audubon Exhibit, NYC, and Toronto’s “Tribute To Women”. Solo shows include exhibits at the Gallery Without Walls and the More-Rubin Gallery, both in Buffalo, the Callahan Gallery in NYC, and the Miller Gallery as well as the Gallery 200 in OH. She has won many awards for her artwork and has had her work published in two watercolor books and several catalogs. She is a member of the Buffalo Society of Artists, an associate member of the A.W.S., N.W.S. and National Casien and Acrylic, NYC. She instructs privately in Buffalo, teaches workshops and judges art shows.

“Todd Chalk's artistry begins with close observation, and close observation means an ability to differentiate between the essential and the incidental: between the enduring forms of things and their particular manifestations. And the word “forms” used here connotes not merely shapes but colors and, in some cases, textures as well. Todd's compositions usually consist of overlapping planes which substitute for spatial recession, giving the work depth and dimension. In some of her paintings, the application of gauze-like substances or collaged elements seems almost to put the work in the category of low relief. But for Todd, composition always begins with an act of observation, and observation begins with an act of decomposition.”[1]—
