Willy Köchler
Karl "Willy" Köchler (German, 1887-1945) landscape painter, graphic artist, lithographer and etcher primarily known for his landscapes, cityscapes, alpine scenes & winterscapes, mountainscapes and street scenes in oil, as well as original etchings. Willy was born July 25, 1887 in Leipzig, Saxony, Germany to Karl and Wilhelmina Köchler, and studied at the Art Academy (Kunstakademie) in Leipzig. In 1914, he moved to Nuremberg, Germany where he worked as a painter and lithographer. Willy was married to Marta (née Dietrich) and the couple had one child. Around the same time, Willy enlisted in the Reserve Infantry Regiment (Fürth/Bavaria) Replacement Battalion and served during WWI from circa 1914-1918. In 1928, Willy contributed 3 prints for the Nuremberg Association of German Artists “Free Secession” (Künstlerbund “Freie Sezession”) portfolio of prints titled Original Graphik: Künstlerbund Freie Sezession (Published 1928), on the occasion of Albrecht Dürer’s 400th anniversary exhibition of his death held in the fall. At this time, Willy was residing at 67 Allersberger Straße (Allersberger St.) in Nuremberg, Germany. Sometime during the course of his career, he dropped his first name of ‘Karl’ and primarily went by and signed his name on his works as ‘Willy Köchler’. Willy died in 1945 in Bad Kreuznach, Germany. Museums & Collections: City Museum of Nuremberg, 4 paintings; Numerous private collections around the world. Exhibitions: Three in 1928, one in 1929 and one in 1936.
