Ivan Lindhé
Nils Ivan Thord Lindhé (Swedish-American, 1875-1954) noted painter, primarily known for his portrait works in oil and watercolor as well as other paintings. Lindhé was born in Sweden and studied art at the Konstakademien (Academy of Art) in Stockholm, while also studying at the War College in Sweden, serving as a commissioned first lieutenant Swedish officer of the Royal First Life Grenadier Regiment, while stationed for four years at Linköping, Sweden from 1898-1902. Around 1904, he traveled to London, England and studied under many of the foremost painters there, and resided in Chelsea, S.W., London. He soon became a member of the Modern Society of Portrait Painters, and numerous well known and distinguished men and women had their portraits painted by Lindhé, to include; the former French ambassador Paul Cambon, Lord Dunmore, Mrs. Patrick Ramsay, sister-in-law of Princess Patricia, Lady Margaret Campbell, Duchess of Argyll and Dame Eileen Younghusband, daughter of the famous explorer and spiritual writer Sir Francis Younghusband.

Lindhé later returned to Sweden and spent some time in Norway, and then lived in Paris for three years before immigrating to the United States in 1924, where he settled in Buffalo, NY for a short time. He maintained his studio and residence at the Markeen Hotel in Buffalo, NY, and around 1927 he moved to Los Angeles, CA, after his wife had died, where he resided until he emigrated from the U.S. back to Sweden in May of 1931. He continued to paint portraits through the 1940’s, and died in 1954. Lindhé exhibited internationally throughout Europe, the United States and Canada, and his works can be found in numerous public & private collections as well as museums and galleries worldwide. Lindhé was also known by other aliases and misspellings of his name, to include; Ivan Nils Lindhe or Lindhé, Nils Ivan Thor Lindhé, Nils Ivan Tord Lindhé, and Iran Lindhé, to name a few.

1875- June 13, born, son of Nils Rudolf Leonard Lindhé (b. Aug. 5, 1843-?) and Ida Marie (née Arnell) Lindhé (b. Jan. 21, 1854-?), in Hedvig Eleonora, Stockholm, Sweden, and siblings included; Bo Nilsson (b. Jan. 10, 1877-?), and Mils Einar Thor (b. Feb. 25, 1878-?), Elsa Marie Signhild (Ekström, b. Apr. 22, 1879-?), and Erika A. Fana (b. Jan. 8, 1881-?), Björn Ragnfast Nils Hampus (b. Oct. 7, 1886-?), Freya Vanda Solveig (b. Nov. 20, 1887-?), and Tora Dagny Sorella (Bergman, b. Mar. 4, 1890- d. Oct. 13, 1972).

1898-1902- Studied art at the Konstakademien (Academy of Art) in Stockholm, Sweden, and also at the War College in Sweden, while serving as a commissioned first lieutenant Swedish officer of the Royal First Life Grenadier Regiment and was stationed at Linköping, Sweden.

1904- Exhibited, group show, “Fortieth Annual Members Exhibition”, of the Dudley Gallery Art Society (also known as The Old Dudley Art Society), Egyptian Hall, Piccadily, London, England. May, exhibited, group show, “136th Annual Exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts”, No. 939 in the show, a watercolor portrait of “The Hon. Mrs. Maurice Glyn”, London, England. At this time he was residing at 65 Glebe Place, Chelsea, S.W., London, England.

1907- May, exhibited, group show, “139th Annual Exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts”, No. 972 in the show, a watercolor portrait of “Mrs. Holdsworth”, London, England.

1912- July 19, traveled and exhibited, solo show, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

1913- He married Wanda Thomasina René (née Guépratte, b. Feb. 24, 1878- d. Circa late 1920’s) and they still resided at 65 Glebe Place Chelsea, S.W., London, England.

Circa 1921-1924- Resided in Paris, France.

1915- September 24, their son Raoul Gilbert Nils Lindhé was born (1915-1943), Adolf Fredriks Parish, Stockholm, Sweden. Exhibited, solo show, Paris, France.

1924- September 6, immigrated to the United States from Gothenburg, Sweden, arriving in New York City on the ship S.S. Drottningholm on October 7, and settled in Buffalo, NY.

1925- May 7, exhibited, solo show, 16 portraits of prominent Buffaloneans and 54 watercolor studies shown, Hotel Statler (foyer of the ballroom), Buffalo, NY. June 1, exhibited, “First Exhibition of the Arts Club of Buffalo”, 34 Buffalo artists represented, 6 paintings by Lindhé were shown, Statler Hotel (foyer), Buffalo, NY.

1926- October 24-November 14, exhibited, group show, “Fourth Annual Exhibition of the Independent Artists”, two paintings shown; a copy of Raphael’s self portrait & a portrait of a “Girl with a Spanish Shawl”, 571-575 Main Street, Buffalo, NY.

1927- May 7-May 15, exhibited, group show, “Salon of the Independent Artists”, watercolor show, Hotel Statler (first floor), Buffalo, NY.

Circa late 1920’s- Ivan’s wife Wanda had died.

Circa 1927- Ivan moved to Los Angeles, CA.

1930- Lindhé was still working as a portraitist and resided at 811 W. 7th Street, 12 Floor, Los Angeles, CA.

1931- May 29, Ivan left Los Angeles and emigrated from the United States back to Sweden, departing from the port of New York City, sailing on the ship the S.S. Gripsholm, and arrived at the port in Gothenburg, Sweden.

1943- February 1, their son Raoul died while serving as a private in the U.S. Army during WWII, Company 358 Quarter Master Corps, Company Camp Ripley Minnesota, and is buried in the Springfield Missouri National Cemetery.

1954- Ivan died, unknown location.
